Traffic and reckless driving in Virginia

Reckless and aggressive driving, DUI and DWI, driving on a suspended license, speeding and accident citations, including matters for students, CDL holders and security clearances.

Chapter 01

Where a traffic charge goes wrong

The charges that bring people to the firm are reckless driving, aggressive driving, driving on a suspended license, DUI and DWI, speeding, improper equipment, accident citations and failure to yield. Some of them look like routine tickets. Reckless driving and DUI are not routine: they are charged in court, and the firm's lawyers treat them that way.

The usual mistake is to take the paper at face value. A person sees a dollar figure, a date and a phone number to pay, and handles it like a bill. For a driver who has a job, a school record or a clearance riding on a clean history, that can be the costliest decision in the whole case.

How the firm works a traffic case

Cornerstone Law Group's lawyers appear in Virginia courts almost every working day, in traffic courts as well as criminal ones. Carolyn E. Dahlberg handles reckless driving and traffic matters, and Thomas Woehrle, who has practiced since 1978, handles criminal defense and traffic law. From the Fredericksburg office the firm reaches the courts across Northern and Central Virginia.

A case begins with what the citation actually charges and what the evidence can support. From there the lawyer looks at the driver's situation: whether a student, a CDL holder or a security clearance is involved, whether a license is already suspended, whether an accident is part of the picture. Those facts decide how a case is approached.

A traffic charge that carries criminal exposure is worked by the same lawyers who handle the firm's criminal defense docket, so a case that grows does not need a new law firm.

Chapter 03

What to bring, and what happens after you call

Call (540) 898-8881. The first consultation is free. Bring the summons or citation, the court date, your driver's license, and any paperwork from an accident or a license suspension. If you are a student, hold a CDL or hold a security clearance, say so on the first call, because it changes how the case is handled.

The Fredericksburg office is at 2016 Lafayette Blvd, Suite 101, and the firm has offices across Northern and Central Virginia. The firm does not promise an outcome on any traffic charge; it explains what you are facing and how it can be defended.

Carolyn E. Dahlberg handles reckless driving and traffic matters, and Thomas Woehrle practices criminal defense and traffic law.

Most exposed

Who has the most riding on the record.

The firm names these three groups on its own traffic page. If you are one of them, tell the lawyer first.

  • Students

A driving record follows a student into insurance, into campus life and into the first job after graduation.

  • CDL holders

A commercial driver's livelihood rides on the license. A citation that costs a private driver a fine can cost a CDL holder the job.

  • Security clearances

People who hold or are seeking a clearance have reason to care about any charge on the record, however small the ticket looked.

A traffic charge that carries criminal exposure is covered under criminal defense. Meet Carolyn E. Dahlberg and Thomas Woehrle on the attorneys page, find the nearest office on the offices page, or contact the firm.
